COPTIC BINDING
In this workshop, we will be working on a lovely hard-backed book, bound using a style of exposed stitching known as Coptic binding. Besides looking attractive, it is also a practical design that allows the book to lie flat when open. This design comprises multiple sections of three or four sheets each, sewn in position one at a time, and incorporating boards front and back to make a solid and satisfying construction. The boards are covered in decorative outers with contrasting inners. For ease of instruction, we will all be sewing a basic Coptic binding in A5 size, but you can choose materials and colours to suit your creative tastes. The day will start with a brief introduction to bookmaking basics (terminology, materials, tools, and so on) and the origins of Coptic stitching. Next, we will choose our materials and begin work step-by-step through the stages of the project. Suitable for all levels of ability, including beginners. A list of items to bring with you will be provided on booking. Some materials, such as boards and threads, will be included in the price of the workshop. A selection of papers will be available to buy on the day. I estimate the cost of materials to be no more than £10. Fees are non-refundable except in the event of cancellation by the tutor. £60 |
