In this workshop we will be learning how to construct Japanese bindings using traditional methods. We will begin with a basic binding and then explore variations in shape, size, cover styles, and stitch designs.
As its name suggests, four-hole binding is a style where stitches are made at four points down the spine of the book, and there are a variety of designs to work on, such as hemp-leaf or tortoise-shell. We'll begin the day by talking about Japanese bookmaking basics (terminology, materials, tools, and so on), and then we'll work step-by-step through the process of constructing a basic book comprising the inner binding, decorative corner pieces, the covers, and finally, the stitching. Then you'll move onto a second book that can incorporate different designs of your choosing. It may be a different shape or size, a more decorative stitch, or a cover variation...or a combination of all! Suitable for all abilities, including beginners. Some materials will be supplied. A list of items to bring with you will be provided on booking. A choice of papers, both plain and decorative, will be available to buy on the day. I estimate the cost of materials to be around £10. You're welcome to bring your own papers. Fees are non-refundable except in the event of cancellation by the tutor. £60 2 places remaining 27/02/25 |
