BUTTONHOLE STITCH BINDING:
BOOK & SLIP CASE

In this workshop we will be working on a lovely book, bound using a style of decorative stitching called Buttonhole Stitch Binding. Besides being unique and  attractive, it is also a practical design in that it allows the book to lie flat when open.

This construction comprises six signatures with contrasting inner covers, held in place by an outer cover, all stitched in position at the same time. It features a window in the spine through which you can see the folded signatures within.

Next, we will design and build a sturdy slip case specifically for the book, which will be fully lined and covered with coloured paper to finish.

This binding and case is very versatile and can be adapted in many ways to suit your creative tastes - size, materials, colours, inner/outer patterns, cover cut-outs, etc.

I will provide a link to a selection of examples to spark your imagination.

We'll start off by talking about bookmaking basics (terminology, materials, tools, and so on) and then go through the materials you have chosen for your book and slip case. We will then then work step-by-step through the stages of the project, book first then slip case, producing components before assembling each finished article.

There will be a maximum of 10 participants to allow for individual tuition.

Suitable for all levels of ability including beginners.

A comprehensive list of materials and tools that you will need is available to download here.

Fees are non-refundable except in the event of cancellation by the tutor.
