DECORATIVE STITCHED BINDINGS
In this workshop we'll be working on two styles of non-adhesive, stitched decorative bindings. Besides looking very attractive, both are practical designs in that they allow the books to lie flat when open. Book 1: FRENCH LINK BINDING is a fairly basic style of stitching that may be left exposed to reveal its very appealing criss-cross pattern. We will create an A5-size book with a soft, flexible cover using designs and colours of your choosing. Book 2: BUTTONHOLE STITCH BINDING is a more complex construction that features a window in the spine through which you can see the folded signatures within. This is a uniquely versatile binding that can be adapted in many ways to suit your creative tastes - size, materials, colours, inner/outer patterns, cover cut-outs, etc. We'll begin the day by talking about bookmaking basics (terminology, materials, tools, and so on) then we'll work step-by-step through the stages of each book, producing their components before assembling the finished bindings. We'll complete Book 1 before going onto Book 2. Suitable for all levels of ability including beginners. A list of items to bring with you will be provided on booking. A selection of papers, boards, threads and some tools, will be available to buy on the day. I estimate the cost of materials for both books to be £10-£15. Fees are non-refundable except in the event of cancellation by the tutor. £52 |
