BUTTONHOLE STITCH BINDING:
BOOK & SLIP CASE In this workshop we will be working on a lovely book, bound using a style of decorative stitching called Buttonhole Stitch Binding. Besides looking unique and attractive, it is also a practical design that allows the book to lie flat when open. This construction comprises six signatures with contrasting inner covers, held in place by an outer cover, all stitched in position at the same time. It features a window in the spine through which you can see the folded signatures within. Next, we will design and build a sturdy slip case specifically for the book, which will be fully lined and covered with coloured paper to finish. This binding and case is very versatile and can be adapted in many ways to suit your creative tastes - size, materials, colours, inner/outer patterns, cover cut-outs, etc. There will be images on hand to spark your imagination. We'll begin the day by talking about bookmaking basics (terminology, materials, tools, and so on) then we'll work step-by-step through the stages of the project, producing their components before assembling the finished articles. Suitable for all levels of ability including beginners. A list of items to bring with you will be provided on booking. A selection of papers, boards, threads and needles will be available to buy on the day. I estimate the cost of materials to be between £10-£15. Fees are non-refundable except in the event of cancellation by the tutor. £55 |
