DECORATED LETTERS AT THE WARNER TEXTILE ARCHIVE

This year I was very pleased to be invited to tutor a couple of one-day courses at the wonderful Warner Textile Archive in Braintree, Essex.  My first workshop was held in July 2018 and was entitled "Decorated Letters". 

Students were taught the process of applying gold leaf with exquisite effect and to paint with gouache using a fine brush to create a handmade illuminated initial.  After selecting a letter style and choosing decorative elements, incorporating favourite colours or themes, the class worked very hard all day to produce their own beautiful and unique design.

I was amazed how quickly everyone learnt each skill along the way and I hope they were all pleased with the gilded letter they took home!

The Warner Textile Archive holds an inspiring and unique collection of more than 60,000 textiles, 10,000 paper designs, pattern books, record books, photographs and documentary material. Elegant velvets and brocades are preserved alongside vibrant printed works, all reflecting the stylistic currents of their time.
